The movie Mar Adentro is based on the life of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic who fought a 30 year campaign to win the right to end his life with diginty. This movie addresses the complicated and controversial topic of euthanasia through the points of view of Ramón and others. This video guide/activity book is designed to spark class discussion and debate through conversation in Spanish (or in English). Teachers will want to set ground rules to monitor and guide all class discussions to ensure that all aspects of discussion are appropriate for class.
To help students grasp the complexities of this video, this guide divides the viewing into four 30-minute viewing parts, each with activities for large and small group discussion/conversation and individual reflection. To activate students' background knowledge and support comprehension and language acquisition, this guide includes engaging activities for before, during and after viewing each part. To maximize understanding, after viewing each part separately, it is recommended that students watch the entire video and complete the activities for Part V as well as the optional activities.
